Get on the Water in Hudson! Boating, Rentals, Fishing, and More
Hudson, Wisconsin offers a history and culture intertwined with the water from the very beginning. It’s no wonder that summertime in Hudson is overflowing with opportunities to get out and make a splash. So many opportunities, in fact, a visitor may need some recommendations to figure out where to dive in first. From waterfalls to boardwalks, boating to scuba diving, fishing spots, and more – everything you need to have a summer full of aquatic adventures is all right here.

Witness the Waterfalls in Willow River State Park
Willow River State Park offers visitors a myriad of options for enjoying the water, including a swimming beach, a public boat launch, and watercraft rentals. However, if you’re looking for a uniquely beautiful and exhilarating experience, your best bet is to chart a course to Willow Falls.

Considered one of the top ten waterfalls in Wisconsin, Willow Falls is an elaborate formation spanning nearly 100 feet wide and cascading over several tiers. They’re a favorite destination for hikers, sightseers, and swimmers alike. Consider making a day of your visit by packing a picnic, allowing for maximum time exploring the landscape of craggy rocks and refreshing pools. For easy access, just drive to the Willow Falls Parking Lot, then follow the marked trail.

Boat, Swim, and Fish on the St. Croix River
The St. Croix River is recognized as a national gem, protected as a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. This designation is held by less than one-quarter of 1% of the nation’s rivers, meaning the St. Croix is considered among the most beautiful, unspoiled riverine environments in the country.

Looking for local public beaches? The beach at Lakefront Park by the Boat House offers four-hour parking, access to public restrooms, and a playground just at the other end of the park. Take a stroll under the Hudson arch and down the pier to discover another beach with views of passing boats and jet skis. Both of these beaches are free to the public.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy the beauty of the St. Croix River, including boating, swimming, and fishing. Beanie’s Marina offers half-day and full-day pontoon rentals making it a great way to explore the river with your family and friends. Just remember to keep your eyes peeled. In addition to being a fantastic place for water recreation, the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is also home to a spectacular array of plants, birds, and other wildlife as Hudson is classified as an official Tree City and Bird City in Wisconsin!

Bring your Boat to the Boardwalk
Lakefront Park in downtown Hudson, Wisconsin has always been a popular spot for Wisconsin boating and boat tours. As of 2024, however, it’s become even more of a water recreation destination thanks to its new floating boardwalk. Believed to be the longest boardwalk on the St. Croix River, the 670-foot structure provides abundant space for boaters to tie off and head into Hudson for food, shopping, or entertainment. No fees are required, and it was designed with bump outs for easy fishing access. Plus, being wheelchair accessible ensures everyone can fully enjoy their time on the water.

Pick your Passion at Perch Lake
If you’re the type who likes to dip their toes (so to speak) in all sorts of different activities, then you’ll definitely want to check out Homestead Parklands on Perch Lake. Located just 9 miles north of Hudson, this park includes the northern half of Perch Lake and is an absolute treasure trove of aquatic activities.

Fishing
Reaching depths of more than 60 feet, Perch Lake is a popular destination for anglers of all ages. Visit Homestead Park’s fishing pier to cast a line and see what’s biting. Trout, panfish, and largemouth bass can all be found in good numbers, according to the Wisconsin DNR.

Watercraft Rentals
Kayak and paddleboard rentals have become particularly in demand these past few years. Luckily, you can find plenty available at Perch Lake, along with classic canoes and paddleboats. Rentals for all watercraft types are $10/hour (as of 2023).

Scuba Diving
Local dive shops frequently plan scuba diving trips to Perch Lake to check out its sunken boats and other points of interest. It’s considered a good training lake by many scuba fans, and a great place to see local fish in their watery homes.
